Mastery
Acquire tools. Develop technique. Build mastery.

Writing novels and memoirs is a combination of instinct, vision, art – and technical craft skills. The unseen instinctive elements are of vital importance. Using writing prompts, questions and delicate reflection, you can find your way to the heart and flow of the story you are called to write.
But that won’t give you craft.
Imagine that you want to build a garden, or a dream house. Or you want to write a song. Thinking, dreaming, waiting, prompting – these things will bring your vision to the surface. And then you will need to acquire the tools and the technical skills to make the garden, build the house, compose the music.
So it is with writing.
You have the vision. You have the dream. You have the source. Now it’s time to learn how to use the tools.
Mastery will show you the tools and teach you how to use them. It will give you mastery over your manuscript.
How It Works
Mastery runs over twelve weeks, with live Zoom sessions every fortnight led by Dr Kathryn Heyman and guests. In alternate weeks, you’ll receive an in-depth video lesson with focused exercises and reflections.
Over twelve weeks you will master:
-
Perspective & Point-of-view
-
Big picture structure
-
Tense & Time
-
Action & Reflection scenes
-
Narrative summary & Exposition
-
Verbage & Grammar; Sentences & Syntax
-
Dialogue & Thought
Each second Tuesday, I’ll release a video breaking down the technical elements of a specific skill. You'll have a week then to play with those tools and to look at the exercises and examples.
Then, on the following Tuesday, we’ll gather together in a live Zoom call. During these two hour sessions with me and my guests, we’ll test-drive those tools and deepen their impact on your manuscript.
You'll have the chance to email any questions that come up in your practice, and we'll address them in our live calls. Over six video lessons and six live calls, you’ll become a master of your craft.
In order to give space to your manuscript, I can only allow space for 16 writers.
The next Mastery will begin on 16th September 2025
Price $2300 Incl.
